Laughter, Cures What Ails You!

Childbirth at 65

With all the new technology regarding fertility recently, a 65-year-old friend of mine was able to give birth. When she was discharged from the hospital and went home, I went to visit.

'May I see the new baby?' I asked

'Not yet,' She said 'I'll make coffee and we can visit for a while first.'

Thirty minutes had passed, and I asked, 'May I see the new baby now?'
'No, not yet,' She said.

After another few minutes had elapsed,

I asked again, 'May I see the baby now?'

'No, not yet,' replied my friend.

Growing very impatient, I asked, 'Well, when can I see the baby?'

'WHEN HE CRIES!' she told me.

'WHEN HE CRIES?' I demanded. 'Why do I have to wait until he CRIES?'

'BECAUSE I FORGOT WHERE I PUT HIM, O.K.?!!'

Childrens Names

A pregnant lady was in an accident and she woke up in the hospital. She noticed she was not pregnant anymore and asked the nurse what happened to her baby.

The nurse said, "You have two healthy babies, a boy and a girl!" The lady said, "Oh, I must name them," but the nurse said, "You were unconscious, so we called your brother, and he named them!"

The lady said, "But he's as dumb as a box of rocks! So what are their names?"

The nurse said, "The girl is called "Denise." The woman replied, "Well that is a pretty name, so what did he name my boy?"

The nurse replied, "Denephew!"

Cure For Hiccups

A woman went to the doctor's office. She was seen by one of the new doctors, but after about four minutes in the examination room, she burst out, screaming as she ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped and asked her what the problem was, and she explained. He had her sit down and relax in another room.

The older doctor marched back to the first and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was PREGNANT?"

The new doctor smiled smugly as he continued to write on his clipboard.

"Cured her hiccups though, didn't it?"

Definition Of Surrogacy

In traditional surrogacy, a surrogate mother is artificially inseminated, either by the intended father or an anonymous donor, and carries the baby to term. The child is thereby genetically related to both the surrogate mother, who provides the egg, and the intended father or anonymous donor.

In gestational surrogacy, an egg is removed from the intended mother and fertilized with the sperm of the intended father or anonymous donor. The fertilized egg, or zygote, is then implanted in a surrogate mother who carries the baby to term. The child is thereby genetically related to the woman who donated the egg and the intended father or sperm donor.

Pre-term Pregnancies

Spring fling may lead to early births . . .

Women who become pregnant in the Spring may be more likely to deliver their babies before 37 weeks gestation than those that conceive at other times of the year.

Drs. Lisa M. Bodnar and Hyagriv N. Simhan of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center studied the records of 75,399 women who delivered at Magee-Women’s Hospital over the 10-year period 1995 to 2005. They grouped the women by season of last menstrual period, used to estimate time of conception.

Babies were more likely to be born early among women who became pregnant in the spring and less likely to those that conceived in the summer.

The rate for early birth, or preterm births were 8.4 percent for those who got pregnant in the summer and 8.8 for fall pregnancies, 9.1 percent for winter pregnancies and 9.2 percent for spring pregnancies.

The rate for birth before 32 weeks was also lowest with summer pregnancies at 2 percent with increasing rates for fall at 2.3 percent, winter 2.5 percent and spring at 2.7 percent.

Reasons given for seasonal differences in preterm delivery include seasonal allergens, viral infections, as well as perhaps seasonal dietary changes, sunlight exposure and exercise habits.

Dr. Simhan presented the study findings this week in San Francisco at the meeting of the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Post Menopausal Births

Post-Menopausal Woman Gives Birth To Baby Girl

Family Calls Daniela Garcia's Birth A 'Miracle'

Some are calling it a miracle baby.

After nearly two decades of trying to conceive, a 52-year-old Indiana woman is finally a mother.
A precious baby girl is the product of 19 years of trying to conceive and a labor of love for 52-year-old Rita Garcia and her husband, Rudy.

"This is amazing. It's like something out of a script in a movie or something," Rudy said.

Rita's niece donated eggs, allowing the couple to undergo in-vitro fertilization in Panama, Rita's homeland. It has been a process that yielded a healthy daughter for Rita.

Rita says her niece gave her the greatest gift.

"Actually having your niece because nobody does that to you. Nobody," Garcia said.

Doctors at St. Margaret Mercy say Garcia is probably the oldest first-time mom to give birth in Northwest Indiana. Her case is even made more unique by the fact that she got pregnant after menopause.

"It's rare," said obstetrician Dr. Karl Schwartz.

Schwartz says the pregnancy was not without its problems.

"She developed gestational diabetes, but it was diet-controlled. She monitored her sugars just like she was supposed to. Basically, everything we asked her to do, she followed to the letter. And that helped big time," Schwartz said.

Another help was a special device that the doctor inserted to elevate Rita's cervix, giving her a better chance to deliver full-term.

The family says this victory serves to encourage other parents fighting infertility.

"Don't give up. I'm telling you. Never give up. Age has nothing do to with this. Miracles happen," Rita said.

The couple says they fought the debate over whether post-menopausal women should conceive because they say sometimes life without parenthood would have been incomplete.

New dad Rudy Garcia works in military research for the U.S. Army in Harvey, Ill.

Mom does not work and will devote all her newfound energy to Daniela.

Artificial Insemination

The first fertility treatment known to man dates back to the early 20th century and required only two things, one, a healthy sperm sample and two a tool that resembled a turkey baster.

Artificial insemination can be helpful to couples who suffer from a sperm allergy, low sperm count or poor sperm mobility. If sperm count or mobility is really low intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI is the preferred treatment.

Your doctor will likely start you on a fertility drug prior to undergoing artificial insemination to improve your odds of becoming pregnant. The fertility drug is started near the beginning of your menstrual cycle to stimulate your ovaries to produce several mature eggs for fertilization instead of the one egg produced normally.

With artificial insemination timing is the key to success so you'll use an ovulation detection kit or your doctor will perform an ultrasound to determine when you'll ovulate so he/she can time the insemination. Sometimes a medication is given to induce ovulation. Once you ovulate your partner will supply a sperm sample which will be "washed" which is a procedure that concentrates the healthiest sperm in a small amount of fluid. This concentrated sperm will be put directly into your uterus through your cervix via a catheter. You'll be able to take a pregnancy test about two weeks after the procedure.

The insemination process takes about an hour and depending on the cause of your fertility problem most women will require three to six insemination procedures before becoming pregnant or trying another treatment.

Age and fertility problem will depend on the success rate of the insemination process.
The majority of couples have a 5 to 20 percent chance of conception with each cycle with those prescribed fertility drugs closer to the 20 percent mark.

Because artificial insemination is less invasive and more economical than in vitro fertilization it is usually a first step in treating fertility problems. It also allows for fertilization to occur naturally inside your body.

The only downside to artificial insemination is that it is very time sensitive. Once ovulation is detected you and your partner must be able to go immediately to your doctors office and your partner must be able to quickly supply a sperm sample.

The costs are relatively inexpensive with treatments costing between $300 to $700 per cycle. Include ultrasound monitoring and medication and the costs increase to about $1500 to $4000 per cycle.

One of the more recent pregnancies by artificial insemination to hit the news was the Masche Sextuplets of Lake Havasu City. Born June 11, 2007.
